As part of our World Heritage Site Volunteer Ranger's tasks we are involved in monitoring local wildlife. Today it was the last time this winter for the monthly "Goosander Roosting Survey" on the Garn Lakes Nature Reserve. We didn't see any goosander, in fact, there were very few birds around but to our surprise we saw a kingfisher. The lakes were frozen over except for one small area by an inlet and that is where the kingfisher was waiting. Kingfisher

This week I went on a course entitled Social Media in Tourism. Very interesting to see how things work and the statistics to go with it -- mind boggling stuff.
So as you can see a few Facebook icons have started to appear throughout the website. Please feel free to join us on Facebook.

Short Eared Owls on Waunavon Bog!
We've lived in Blaenavon for all our lives but last weekend we saw Short Eared Owls hunting on Waunavon Bog for the very first time.
Surprisingly we weren't the only ones. There were a couple of serious twitchers from Brecon out there too with a large scope and camera attached.
Apparently these are one of the few owls that hunt during the day. They were about the size of a buzzard and flying only a few feet off the ground just above the height of the rushes. It was quite eerie as they went in and out of the low cloud on the Coity Mountain.

Not one of our photos but this is what they look like.
Maybe we'll get a snap one day.

We've just spent the last 4 days decorating the hallway, stairs and landing. On New Years Eve we were still painting at 23:40!!
Glossing is by far the worst task and it took 2 days. I am so glad the doors are waxed and not painted.

Have a happy and prosperous 2012

Reindeer

Reindeer 2011

We know when Christmas is upon us when the Blaenavon Winter Wonderland weekend arrives.
Again this year we had the ice rink and reindeer teams staying with us.
It was a great weekend in the town with lots of stalls and entertainment.
At the end of the day Comet and Blitzen spent a cozy night in our garage. No snow this year though.
